"I share the widespread concern over the surge of unaccompanied minors," says Congresswoman Barbara Lee
Washington, DC - In response to the growing crisis of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released this statement:
“I share the widespread concern over the surge of unaccompanied minors, principally from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, being apprehended and detained at the border.”
“This humanitarian crisis requires a comprehensive and timely response that puts the interests and safety of these children first.”
“I am pleased that part of the resources that President Obama is seeking from Congress will go toward reducing the violence, corruption and poverty that are driving this humanitarian crisis. In fact, according to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), almost 60% of children interviewed were in need of international protection and stated that they were fleeing violence.”
“The current crisis and the unacceptable conditions at DHS and HHS facilities are symptoms of the need for comprehensive immigration reform, which House Republicans continue to hold hostage. There are only 243 immigration judges handling more than 375,000 cases.”
“We need to ensure that all of these children receive due process and their asylum rights under current U.S. law are respected. We must also move quickly to ensure the Administration has the resources necessary to address the pressing needs of these children and this humanitarian crisis.”
