Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement on the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens from the United States Supreme Court:

 

“Justice Stevens is a top-notch jurist who contributed greatly to our nation through his lengthy service on the Supreme Court and principled decision making in countless landmark cases.

 

“As President Obama considers candidates to fill this vacancy, I trust that he will find a smart and well qualified jurist with unquestionable impartiality and an unyielding commitment to the bedrock Constitutional values of justice and equality for all people.

 

“Additionally, it is essential President Obama consider gender and ethnic diversity on the high court in an increasingly diverse America.

 

“I look forward to the U.S. Senate giving a timely and fair confirmation hearing for the eventual nominee.”
