Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) hailed an announcement by the Obama Administration that the National Institute of Health (NIH) will direct $61.5 million in grants to fund 107 medical research-related projects in the Ninth Congressional District.

The NIH funds biomedical research and research training programs at more than 3,000 institutions in the 50 states and territories. This disbursement is being made available through $5 billion in grants that Obama Administration issued under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund cutting-edge medical research projects throughout the country.

The $61.5 million in grants will fund projects at the following institutions:

• $16.4 million to fund 55 projects at the University of California at Berkeley
• $267,616 to fund one project at Aerosol Dynamic, Inc
• $226,130 to fund one project at the Bay Area Tumor Institute
• $10 million to fund 13 projects at Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland
• $425,304 to fund three projects at Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center
• $99,999 to fund one project at Iris AO, Inc
• $26.4 million to fund 21 projects at Kaiser Foundation Research Institute
• $582,661 to fund one project at U.S. Agricultural Research Service
• $6.4 million to fund 11 projects at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

“I couldn’t be more pleased by the Obama Administration’s decision to provide funding for these projects,” Congresswoman Lee said. “These institutions are committed to engaging in ground-breaking research projects, and this funding will allow them to continue their important work.”
