Oakland, CA – Today, First Lady Michelle Obama visited Unity’s Upper Cardozo Health Center in Washington, DC to announce the release of $851 million in grants to address immediate and pressing health center facility and equipment needs and increase access to health care for millions of Americans.  Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) applauded this announcement, noting that nearly $6 million of those dollars will go to health centers in the Ninth Congressional district of California.

The grants were made possible through the Recovery Act Capital Improvement Program (CIP), part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. They will support the construction, repair and renovation of over 1,500 health center sites nationwide. More than 650 centers will use the funds to purchase new equipment or health information technology (HIT) systems, and nearly 400 health centers will adopt and expand the use of electronic health records. Health Centers in the ninth Congressional District that will receive funding through the recovery package include:

  • Lifelong Medical Care - $975,480

  • Alameda County Health Care Services Agency - $483,415
  • Asian Health Services - $953,745
  • Children’s Hospital & Research Center of Oakland - $341,595
  • La Clinica De La Raza - $2,129,395
  • West Oakland Health Center - $1,010,515

“These funds are critical to helping our health centers continue to give quality care to the people of the 9th Congressional District,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “I applaud the Obama Administration for continuing to work to provide funding to much needed programs in our communities.”
