OAKLAND - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) announced today that the Oakland Fire Department has been selected to receive a grant award through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The department will receive $471,249 through the DHS grant program for operations and safety. The grant program is intended to provide additional funding to allow fire departments throughout the nation address emergency response needs.

Since 2001, the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program has helped fighters and other first responders obtain critically-needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

“I am pleased that the Oakland Fire Department has been selected to receive this critical funding,” said Congresswoman Lee. “The city of Oakland has experienced a catastrophic drop in revenues and has been forced to reduce services and staff. This grant will allow the fire department to secure additional equipment so that it can better serve the public.”

This is the second source of federal funding the Oakland Fire Department has received this year. Last month, the department was awarded $789,360 through the FEMA Assistance Firefighters Grant Program for the purchase of an additional fire truck.
