ongresswoman Barbara Lee Blasts Bush Administration for Not Providing Enough Jobs for Americans

President Bush Will Almost Certainly End Administration as First President since Depression-Era Herbert Hoover Not to Create Net Positive Number of Jobs during Presidential Administration

Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today attacked the Bush Administration for the August jobs report, which shows that yet again, the President’s economic policies have not provided enough jobs for Americans. 8 million American workers are currently unemployed.

During August, 144,000 jobs were created, although economists claim that the Administration should be creating more than 200,000 new jobs per month.

Bush would need to create more than 1 million jobs in the last month of his Presidency to avoid becoming the first President since Herbert Hoover sunk the United States into a recession to actually lose American jobs over the course of his Administration.

The latest employment numbers for California show that 17,300 jobs were lost in July, adding up to 202,600 jobs lost in the state since Bush took office.

“The President continues to say that this economy is growing, but the numbers actually tell a different story,” said Lee. “We can no longer wait for the President’s promises to bear fruit because too many Americans and their families need real jobs -- and they need those jobs now. We need a new Commander-in-Chief of our economy.”
