Pro-Choice Caucus Leaders Commend President Biden’s Actions to Restore Reproductive Freedom
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Diana DeGette (D-CO) as co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, issued the following statement after President Biden today took executive action to restore access to reproductive freedom for everyone in the U.S. and around the world:
“The Trump administration’s Global Gag Rule has limited people’s ability to access reproductive care and has had devastating consequences on low-income communities and communities of color. After years of tireless attacks on our reproductive rights, ensuring people around the world have access to comprehensive reproductive health care must be one of our most urgent priorities.
“The Biden administration’s efforts to repeal this dangerous rule – and begin the process of restoring the Title X family planning network – is exactly the type of leadership we need right now. By overturning the Global Gag Rule, withdrawing from the anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ+ Geneva Consensus Declaration, and restoring funding to the UN Population Fund, we have signaled to the world that this is a new era for reproductive freedom.
“While the executive order signed today is a significant first step toward ensuring people, once again, have access to the health care they need, there is still much more that needs to be done.
“The Pro-Choice Caucus remains fully committed to, among other things, codifying the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law and repealing the Hyde Amendment to ensure all Americans – regardless of where they live, or how much money they make – have access to safe and affordable abortion care.”
