Pro-Choice Caucus Leaders Recognize 48th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Today, U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Diana DeGette (D-CO), co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, released the following statement marking the 48th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision:

“For nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade has protected the right to reproductive care. After the last four years of consistent assaults from the Trump administration, it’s never been more crucial to renew our efforts to strengthening reproductive rights.

“Trump has emboldened anti-choice politicians to assault reproductive rights across the country and around the world—from global gag rules to harmful abortion bans and defunding reproductive health care.

“Everyone — regardless of race, income, or zip code — should have access to the health care they need, and the right to decide what’s best for their body and their family.

“The Pro-Choice Caucus will fight with everything we have to expand reproductive rights and ensure Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land. Congress has the ability to act to preserve these rights, by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act which codifies the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law and ensures everyone, no matter their zip code, has access to abortion services. With the new Biden administration, we will have an opportunity to strengthen reproductive protections and undo the most harmful damages done by the Trump administration.”

Members of the Pro-Choice Caucus have written a letter to the Biden administration requesting he take executive action on several sexual and reproductive health measures. The full list of issues the members of the Pro-Choice Caucus have sent the Biden Administration can be found in this letter.
