Pro-Choice Caucus Leaders’ Statement on nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Diana DeGette (D-CO), as co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, issued the following statement on the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court:
“The nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court is now the single greatest threat to women’s right to abortion care.
“As co-chairs of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, we are deeply troubled, not only by Judge Barrett's long record of opposing women’s right to reproductive care, but her open attacks on the Affordable Care Act and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, as well.
“Judge Barrett’s confirmation to the highest court in our land would put at risk the rights of millions of women and could bring an end to the protections we are currently afforded under Roe v. Wade.
“The American people must be given a say in this process. Senator Mitch McConnell’s attempt to ram through Judge Barrett’s nomination before voters across the country have a chance to make their voices heard is shameful; and breaks with the Senate’s long-standing precedent.
“Both individually and as a group, members of the Pro-Choice caucus have called on the Senate to wait until after the next president is inaugurated before considering any nominee to replace Justice Ginsburg - and we renew that call today."
