Representative Barbara Lee Calls for Art Submissions for U.S. Capitol Exhibit

Deadline for Submissions Set for April 10, 2002

Washington DC - Congresswoman Barbara Lee today issued a call for submissions for the 21st Annual National High School art competition and exhibition called An Artistic Discovery, a year-long exhibit sponsored by more than 300 Members of Congress.

High School students from the 9th Congressional District of California, which includes Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont, are requested to submit artwork to their high school principal’s office or art department.

"This art contest is very important for our community because it supports artistic expression and rewards high school students for their outstanding talent and accomplishments," said Lee. "We need to remember that activities such as art, music, and sports are essential to a student’s development and to our sense of identity, community, and pride."

Each high school may establish their own deadline for the selection of no more than three works to be judged in the district-wide competition, but Congresswoman Lee’s office must receive submissions by Wednesday, April 10, 2002.

One work of art will be chosen by a panel of judges during an exhibit that runs April 24 - May 4, 2002, at the Junior Center for Arts and Sciences. The work of art chosen to represent the Ninth District of California will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. While only one student’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, Congresswoman Lee pointed out the importance of displaying our students’ work locally during April and May.

"I am very pleased that, thanks to the collaborative efforts and support of several organizations and individuals, we will have an opportunity to celebrate and reward the artistic accomplishments of all our students." said Lee.

The Junior Center is located at 558 Bellevue Avenue, Lake Merritt, in Oakland. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
