Representative Lee Tours AC Transit Maintenance Facility Following Federal Grant for Upgrades
Oakland, CA— Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) toured the AC Transit Central Maintenance Facility in East Oakland. AC Transit is one of 14 recipients of the $17.4 million in community project funding that Congresswoman Lee secured for the East Bay in Fiscal Year 2024. The funds will be used to install hydrogen-sensing technology and safety equipment needed to perform maintenance on zero-emissions buses.
“AC Transit is a national leader in clean public transportation, and this project will not only make it safer for workers to repair hydrogen cell buses but also improve air quality through zero-emissions technology, “said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “These investments will grow our economy and make a real difference in the lives of so many in our community. I am proud to have used my role on the Appropriations committee to fight for a safer, healthier East Bay.”
"Our fleet of hydrogen fuel-cell buses is not only replacing diesel engines but also positioning AC Transit at the forefront of the transition to zero emission buses before 2040. However, these next-generation buses have specific maintenance needs that require specialized facility standards," said General Manager and CEO Michael Hursh. "Thanks to the combined advocacy of Congresswoman Lee and Senator Padilla, we now have the funding needed to upgrade three maintenance facilities into modern hubs that will support clean transit and green jobs for decades to come."
