The university also slated to receive federal funding for health care training

Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) is pleased to announce that the University of California at Berkeley has been selected to receive $1.2 million in funding from the National Institute of Health to fund five biomedical research and research training projects.

The funding for these projects is being made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NIH has funded biomedical research and training program at more than 3,000 institutions throughout the United States. “It is with great pleasure that I announce the funding for these important projects,” Congresswoman Lee said. “These institutions have made immeasurable contributions in the field of biomedical research. This funding will help U.C. Berkeley and Lawrence Lab to continue to seek advances in their important work.”

Through this funding, U.C. Berkeley will receive:

$186,330 to research sleep-loss, human memory and brain plasticity across the lifespan

$100,375 to study the shutoff of cellular gene expression by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus

$148,175 to investigate sensory-motor control of the binocular near response

$371,805 to research biomarkers of formaldehyde exposure and toxicity

$445,911 to determine emotional and age-reaction regulation and understanding

Berkeley Livermore Lab will also receive $421,454 to determine in vivo analysis of a non-coding susceptibility region for coronary artery disease as part of this funding disbursement.

Additionally, the University of California at Berkeley has been chosen to receive $122,566 in federal funding to support the training of health care professionals. Of that amount, $46,274 will be used to fund scholarships programs for disadvantaged students, while $76,262 will be used to support public health traineeships.

Finally, the City of Berkeley will be awarded $1 million through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) awards made by the Department of Energy (DOE).  Under DOE’s (EECBG) program, this funding will help communities and states improve their energy efficiency, reduce their energy use and fossil fuel emissions, and create green jobs locally. All totaled, the State of California will receive $49.6 million in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding.
