Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) is pleased to announce that the University of California, Berkeley has been selected to receive a $1,511,876 grant from the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to support the work of the University’s Integrative Research-Childhood Leukemia and Environment Center.

The funding will be used by the Integrative Research-Childhood Leukemia and Environment Center to examine the effects of chemical exposure and genetic factors in the development of childhood leukemia. Research funded by this award will build on previous studies that cite exposure to potentially carcinogenic chemicals, including tobacco and pesticides, in the childhood leukemia.

“I congratulate the University of California at Berkeley for being selected to receive this funding,” Congresswoman Lee said. “In the spirit of environmental justice, this funding will help bring light to the factors that lead to this difficult and complex disease.”
