ActionAid USA Celebrates as the Assessing Progress in Haiti Act of 2013 Passes the US House of Representatives

We applaud the leadership of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking member Eliot Engel, Chairman Ed Royce, Congresswomen Yvette Clark, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, for their bipartisan work to usher in this significant victory.

Kysseline Chérestal, Senior Policy Analyst at ActionAid USA says: “This is a great victory as Haiti continues to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake. Now is not the time for the US to forget its promises and give in to Haiti fatigue.”

“This bill will help set Haiti on the path to recovery by ascertaining whether the priorities of vulnerable populations have been taken into account in the design and implementation of relief programs and determining what the impact of US programs has been on key issues such as food security, livelihoods, and land tenure security for smallholder farmers, particularly women.”

In an official statement, Congresswoman Barbara Lee says: “We need to make certain that the people of Haiti are on the road to recovery and not forgotten. Almost four years after one of the most catastrophic earthquakes in history, we have very little accountability and oversight in the recovery efforts, and we need to change that, which is precisely what my bill, the Assessing Progress in Haiti Act of 2013 would do.”

ActionAid, friends and supporters of Haiti call on the US Senate to swiftly pass the Assessing Progress in Haiti Act in a similar bi-partisan fashion.  Now more than ever, we need to ensure effective, transparent and accountable US aid to Haiti.
