Congresswoman Lee Statement on Independence Day

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement marking Independence Day:

“On Independence Day, I am reminded of our continuing fight for a more perfect union—one that truly guarantees liberty, equality and justice for all. These principles have never been realized for large parts of this country: neither in 1776, when the most powerful figures were slaveowners, or in 2022, as a far-right Supreme Court disregards the will of the people. In recent months, our Constitution has been wielded by some as a tool to undermine our basic rights; let this day be a reminder that we never fully lived up to our founding values and are a nation in progress. Today, we recommit to the generational fight to create a better future for every American, no matter their race, sexuality, or income. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.”
