Congresswoman Barbara Lee Observes International Women’s Day

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day:

“This year, we reflect on International Women’s Day and celebrate the contributions of countless women who paved the way for future generations, including trailblazers like Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and Vice President Kamala Harris. We also recognize the challenges ahead as we face a global pandemic that has disproportionately impacted women and women of color.

“We have much work to do to create equitable policies to promote gender equity. Today, President Biden signed two executive orders aimed at supporting the equality and well-being of women across our country and around the globe. One order will establish a White House Gender Policy Council to ensure that all policy decisions made by this administration, both domestic and foreign, are viewed through the lens of gender equity. The other directs the Department of Education to evaluate Title IX changes made under the Trump administration. We have a long way to go to achieve gender equity in our country, but this is a strong start.

“On International Women’s Day, let us recommit to our country’s promise of ensuring dignity and equality for all. I will continue to work with the Biden-Harris administration to close the pay gap, expand reproductive healthcare, support relief for women and families, and protect the rights of women around the globe.”
