Congresswoman Lee Congratulates AIDS 2020 Co-Chair Cynthia Carey-Grant

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement following the announcement of Oakland’s Cynthia Carey-Grant as a co-chair of the 23rd International AIDS Conference:

“Congratulations to Cynthia Carey-Grant on her appointment as co-chair of the 23rd International AIDS Conference. Cynthia has dedicated her life to fighting HIV/AIDS and helping those with the virus, including women of color and members of our transgender community, live with dignity. She has worked directly in our East Bay community – fighting the epidemic on the frontlines with healthcare providers, advocates, and researchers. She is a fierce advocate for the most vulnerable among us, those who have been left out of the conversations in the past, including sex workers and incarcerated women. I can’t think of a more fitting honor for such a leader fighting for an AIDS-free generation than to serve as a co-chair of AIDS 2020.

“The Bay has been a tale of two cities for far too long in the fight against HIV and AIDS. My own East Bay community has struggled in the fight against AIDS for many years, and racial and economic disparities have left us out of the conversation. I’m so proud that AIDS 2020 will be co-hosted by both San Francisco and Oakland, and I look forward to our communities working together to make sure this conference is safe, inclusive, and accessible to all.”
