Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-9) applauded the finalized fuel economy standards released by the Obama Administration’s to begin in model year 2012. By 2016 the fleet average will be 35.5 miles per gallon, which is four years earlier than the existing CAFE law requires.

“I am proud to see standards pioneered by the State of California in 2004 reemerge after years of obstructionism under the Bush Administration to be embraced on the national level.

“President Obama’s swift action to implement bold national fuel efficiency standards and reduce tailpipe emissions will benefit consumers, our communities and the environment, as well as strengthen the economic and national security of the United States.

“There is no doubt that the Administration’s clean car standards, estimated to reduce oil consumption by 1.3 million barrels of oil a day by 2020, are a critical element of any strategy to drive domestic innovation in clean car technologies and provide the framework for a greener future for America’s transportation system.

“Our efforts to achieve energy independence must complement our actions to combat global warming through the promotion of more efficient vehicles, and the use of truly, clean and renewable fuel and energy resources. Today’s announcement represents such an approach.”
