Barbara Lee Attends Signing of Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released this statement following the signing of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act.

“I was pleased to join my colleagues and President Obama for the signing of this historic investment in higher education that will expand educational opportunities for America’s students and families nationwide.

“The Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act strengthens the Pell Grant program, invests in community colleges, extends support for Historically Black Colleges and other Minority Serving Institutions, and helps student borrowers manage their student loan debt. 

“With rising health care costs and increases in college tuitions, families across this country are facing a tough economic burden. This bill will help those families by providing the necessary resources for our students so they can have access to higher education and ultimately graduate with a degree. This will lead not only to a stronger economy, but a stronger nation.

“I am pleased that provision my colleagues and I worked to include such as $2.55 billion in mandatory funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Minority Serving Institutions were incorporated in this legislation. It also includes $2 billion over four years for community colleges which is the largest and fastest growing segment of our educational system.

“Today was a victory for the American family and our young people. I look for to continuing working with my colleagues and the Administration in shaping our broader education agenda.”
