Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-9) released the following statement commemorating Earth Day 2009:

“Earth Day provides us with an opportunity to focus on protecting the environment for future generations and further commit ourselves toward working to achieve energy independence by tackling global warming.

“I remain committed to creating a greener future through investments in clean and renewable technologies, energy efficiency, and improved infrastructure to create sustainable communities.

“In Congress, I am working to ensure that our policies protect the environment here in my district and throughout our global community. I am proud that in this Congress we have passed landmark legislation authorizing the $36 Billion in green energy and $500 million for Green Job Training through the Department of Labor, the single largest investments of their kind in the history of our nation.

“This session the House also passed H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act -- the first push to create a national cap on carbon emissions and other green house gases and demonstrate U.S. leadership as we push forward with a coordinated, international response to the threat of climate change. It is imperative that we push the Senate to pass this legislation so that we can begin to put these measures into action.

“Additionally, I am dedicated to bringing the necessary funds and resources back to the 9th Congressional District to support emerging green industries and foster creative green job growth.

“California’s 9th Congressional District continues to be at the forefront of these efforts - leading the charge to innovatively address our environmental crisis while bolstering economic and environmentally-sustainable growth - and for making the Bay Area a unique and environmentally conscious place to live.

“This Earth Day and throughout the year, I encourage you share your time and energy to help preserve and restore our environment.”
