Barbara Lee Condemns GOP Budget Bill as “Immoral”

(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) released the following statement condemning as “immoral” the Republican budget resolution that was approved by the House by a vote of 217-215 at 1:39 this morning:

“The Republican majority in this House has given us an immoral budget bill that flies in the face of our nation’s basic values.

“Incredibly, in the wake of devastating hurricanes and the two Americas that it clearly exposed, Republicans have seized the moment to launch an assault against the ‘least among us,’ in order to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.

“Shame on the Republicans who vote for $11.4 billion in Medicaid cuts that would slash health services for the poor and long term care patients.

“Shame on the Republicans who vote for more than $14 billion in student loan cuts that would raise the cost of college for students and their families through increased interest rates and loan fees.

“Shame on the Republicans who vote to cut 225,000 people off of food stamps.

“We must turn back this incredible attack on our nation’s most vulnerable populations, our student and our values and we must reject the morally bankrupt Republican agenda that cuts services to Katrina victims and working families in order to finance billions in tax cuts targeted at the wealthy and that will only saddle future generations with more debt?

“Don’t tell me we can’t do better than this.”
