Barbara Lee Congratulates UC for Sudan Divestment Decision

(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) today congratulated the Regents of the University of California for their decision to divest the university’s endowment of investments in nine companies doing business in Sudan, whose government has been conducting a campaign of genocide in the Darfur region.

Lee, who has traveled twice to Darfur and who wrote a letter to the U.C. Regents that was signed by 21 members of the California Congressional delegation, urging them to divest, released the following statement:

“I congratulate the University of California for taking this principled stand against genocide, and I urge other universities and public pension programs to follow their lead. Nobody should have to worry that their university endowment, or their pension is supporting genocide. The students at the University of California understand that, and I particularly want to congratulate and thank them for all of their work and dedication to bring about this outcome today.”
