Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement regarding the ongoing deficit negotiations and the Republicans’ record on job creation:

“Tomorrow marks 200 days of a Republican controlled House without a single jobs bill coming up for a vote.

“Republicans’ willingness to bring our economy to the brink of disaster is a frightening sign of just how dangerous their ‘you are on your own’ agenda has become.

“The current, so-called ‘debt crisis’ has been completely manufactured by House Republicans attempting to advance an extremist agenda. This should be a simple vote to allow the US Treasury to fund all of the programs and obligations of the entire federal government that are already in the law.

“Instead, Republicans are holding the future of our entire nation hostage in order to protect tax cuts for the super rich and tax loopholes for special interests. They are already hurting American families by causing real uncertainty about our nation’s ability to pay our bills.

“Enough is enough. We should immediately pass a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling so that we can get to work on the real crisis in this country: the jobs crisis.

“And as the first order of business, I call on the Speaker, once again, to bring my legislation H.R. 589, which would extend vital unemployment insurance for the long-term unemployed, to the floor for an up or down vote.

“We must work together to move our country forward and allow our economy to grow again.”
