(Washington, DC) – Given the expensive monthly cost of the ‘so called war on terror’ and the significant discrepancy between the $11.7 billion the Pentagon estimates and recent projections of $15 billion, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Oakland) issued the following statement:

“While the Pentagon estimates the monthly cost of Bush’s war at $11.7 billion, recent calculations project an increase up to $15 billion. How much is too much? Too many men and women have already paid with their lives and way too many Americans are struggling, living month to month as Congress has been forced to drastically decrease funding for domestic priorities so we can fund Bush’s flawed foreign policy.

“With the president signing into law unconditioned funds for Iraq, the cost of this senseless war keeps rising with no end in sight. Safe and timely redeployment from Iraq is the best way to decrease war spending and shift funding to support working families. Each additional day our brave service men and women remain in harm’s way in Iraq is another day that U.S. national security is further compromised and our domestic agenda goes underfunded.”
