Congresswoman Barbara Lee Announces $2.7M Federal Grant to expand STEM Education and Career Exposure for Girls

Oakland, CA — Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) announced that Techbridge (Oakland, CA), will receive a $2.7 million grant award from the National Science Foundation to expand Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and career exposure for girls in grades 5-12.
“I am pleased that Techbridge has been selected to receive this important and competitive funding,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “It is our obligation to ensure that all children are equipped with the STEM education they need to contribute and thrive in the economy of the future and I applaud the National Science Foundation and Techbridge’s efforts towards reaching this goal.”
The grant will be used to fund a Techbridge project that seeks to increase girls' engineering, technology, and science skills and career interests; build STEM capacity and sustainability across communities; and enhance STEM and career exploration for underrepresented girls and their families.
Techbridge is a non-profit organization that empowers girls to realize their dreams through science, technology and engineering. Since 2000, Techbridge has served over 4,000 girls in grades 5-12 through its after-school and summer programs, and reached another 15,000 girls through a national partnership with Girl Scout councils. Additionally, Techbridge has trained and supported over 8,000 role models, teachers, and families to build a network of support for girls and share best practices and guidance for inspiring girls in STEM.
