Congresswoman Barbara Lee Announces $2M Federal Grant for Energy Efficient Buildings

Oakland, CA — Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee announced that Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) will receive a $2 million grant award from the U.S. Department of Energy. The grant is part of that agency’s efforts to help small buildings save energy, save money, and reduce carbon emissions.

“I am very pleased  the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory  has been selected for this competitive funding,” said Congresswoman Lee. “This investment will leverage the LBNL’s energy efficiency expertise into tools to help small commercial owners and operators cut their energy usage—benefitting the environment, the community, and the economy.”

The Small Building Energy Efficiency program invests $10 million nationally to reduce obstacles to implementing energy efficiency for small commercial operators. LBNL will partner with Architecture 2030 to develop a program and technical toolkit to provide small commercial projects with guidance and best practices for reducing energy costs. The Department of Energy has taken special interest in addressing energy usage in the commercial sector, which consumes about 20% of the nation’s energy and of which 90% of buildings are less that 50,000 square feet.
