Congresswoman Barbara Lee Announces Latest Endorsements for Caucus Chair

Including Ranking Members Grijalva, Scott, and Thompson; and Cecile Richards and Ady Barkan

Washington, D.C. – Today, several prominent congressional leaders released letters endorsing Congresswoman Barbara Lee in her bid for Democratic Caucus Chair. Below are excerpts from the endorsements:

Congressman Raúl Grijalva, Ranking Member of the Committee on Natural Resources, issued a letter of support for Congresswoman Lee. His full letter is available here and an excerpt is below:

“This Congress will be the most the most diverse in our nation’s history -- our leadership should be too. I am confident that as Caucus Chair, Barbara will fight for every voice to be at the table, so that we can address the expectations from the American people.”

Congressman Bobby Scott, Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, also issued a letter of support for Congresswoman Lee. His full letter is available here and an excerpt is below:

“We need a proven and effective leader who is not afraid to fight for every Member of our caucus and is ready to deliver results for the American people. Barbara's tenacity, effective coalition building, and experience make her the best candidate for this job.”

Congressman Bennie Thompson, Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, also issued a letter of support for Congresswoman Lee. His full letter is available here and an excerpt is below:

“Barbara has proven herself to be a principled and pragmatic leader, an effective legislator, and a mentor to many in our caucus. Barbara will uplift, empower, and include every member of our caucus. She will be a voice for all of us, from every region, ideology, and background.”

Last week, former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards announced her support for Congresswoman Lee for the role of Democratic Caucus Chair:

“The fearless Congresswoman Barbara Lee has been an unrepentant supporter of women’s rights, civil rights, and reproductive rights. She would be an excellent chair of the Democratic Caucus.”

Ady Barkan, a leading civil rights activist and voice in the fight for affordable healthcare, also announced his support for Congresswoman Lee Chair:

“We need House leadership that includes progressives and that gives black women power proportionate to their contribution. That's why it's crucial that [Congresswoman Barbara Lee] be in leadership. To me, this is non-negotiable. She is an American hero.”
