Congresswoman Barbara Lee Applauds Transfer of Oakland Army Base to City of Oakland and Port of Oakland

Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today applauded the transfer of Oakland’s former army base from the State of California to the City of Oakland, which has agreed to lease part of the land to the Port of Oakland. The transfer of the almost 365 acres of land came after Governor Gray Davis certified that the property was environmentally suitable for the transfer and after the Governor was assured that the cleanup of the former oil recycling facility would go on as planned.

The transfer came after months of negotiations by local officials, an agreement that will terminate costly legal battles and, through development of the Port, will continue to ensure that the Port remains an economic engine for the East Bay while Oakland will receive money for the rental of the land.

Under the agreement, the Port will expand the maritime operations for what is the fourth-largest container port in the country. The Port will relocate its rail yard to the bottom part of the property, translating into greater efficiency for the Port and its shippers.

Oakland also benefits from the deal because it will receive $30 million over the next three decades for the lease of land to the Port. Oakland also plans to transform the upper part of the property into a beautiful entryway into the city from the Bay Bridge.

“I’m pleased that all of our hard work has finally paid off,” said Lee. “I look forward to working with both the Port of Oakland and the City of Oakland to make sure that the transfer of this land will lead to continued economic success for and beautification of the 9th Congressional District. This is a win-win situation for all parties.”

“I also want to push Oakland and the Port to live up to their promise made almost a decade ago for a multi-million dollar community trust fund to serve the West Oakland community affected by military base closure.”
