Washington, D.C.— Today, in her capacity as a United States Representative to the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Congresswoman Barbara Lee attended the United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution requiring Syrian President Bashar al-Asaad to surrender his regime's chemical weapons. The draft resolution passed unanimously.
“The Security Council’s vote on this resolution is a great moment that shows us the true power of diplomacy and the value of the United Nations. This agreement is a positive step in the right direction,” Congresswoman Lee said. “And, as we proceed, the international community must focus on continuing the effort in a transparent, expeditious, and verifiable manner, which this resolution will help to ensure.”
President Obama spoke earlier today prior to the vote, saying, “This resolution, I think is a potentially huge victory for the international community.”
Earlier this week, Congresswoman Lee joined the UN General Assembly for a series of high-level meetings, including events focusing on international development, advancing Millennium Development Goals, and the Global Fund.
