Congresswoman Barbara Lee Celebrates Mandela Day
Washington, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement as she marks Mandela Day:
“Today, President Mandela’s 95th birthday is not only an opportunity to celebrate his perseverance and leadership, but to honor his legacy by committing 67 minutes of service to our communities, marking 67 years of Madiba’s service.
“I was first inspired by Mr. Mandela in the early 1970s, and since then he has been a great source of courage. His passion and dedication have inspired me for decades; that inspiration led me to be an election observer in South Africa during his first election for president and to lead the successful effort to take Mr. Mandela and the African National Congress off the American Terrorist Watch List, which happened five years ago today, on his 90th birthday.
“The ideals that Mr. Mandela struggled for are dear to the American people; those ideals are at the foundation of our own great country, and I encourage everyone to gather together to celebrate Mandela Day. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mandela and his family for his speedy recovery.”
