Congresswoman Barbara Lee Celebrates Small Business Week

Oakland, CA — Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement recognizing the 50th Annual National Small Business Week:

“This week it gives me great pleasure to honor our East Bay small businesses, who are truly the engine that drives our local economy. I join with my Democratic colleagues in placing small businesses and small business owners at the front of our plan for economic growth and sustainable job creation.

“I am proud entrepreneurial spirit found in the East Bay as is a hub of innovative small businesses in diverse sectors, from the arts and food service, to clean energy, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology.

“In Congress, we must build on work such as the American Jobs Act and our Make It In America agenda, to provide small businesses with incentives to expand and hire, make it more cost-effective to invest in plants and equipment, and facilitate transitions to clean energy and high-tech manufacturing.

We cannot afford more games from the Republicans that protect the sequester, slow our growth, create instability, and make every month uncertain for our nation’s small businesses and their employees. Congress must work together to put people to work so that we have an economy that works for the whole country.

“Additionally, we must continue to ensure that small businesses, as well as minority- and women-owned businesses are granted real access to thousands of federal contract opportunities. As a former small business owner, I know that the federal government can play a vital role in supporting our local economies through fair and equitable contracting.

“During this 50th Small Business Week, I commend the small business owners who devote their lives to their enterprises for the good of their families, employees, and the greater economy. They truly deserve every effort from this Congress to ensure they have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”
