Congresswoman Barbara Lee Disappointed by Continued Job Loss under Bush Administration

California Loses 16,000 more Jobs in September

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) today said that she was disappointed that the state of California continues to lose jobs, according to the latest state unemployment figures. In September, the state lost 16,000 more jobs, bringing to 298,200 the number of jobs that have been lost since January 2001, when President Bush took office. Nationwide, more than 2.7 million jobs have been lost under the Bush Administration. The California unemployment rate stands at 6.4%, while the national rate is 6.1%.

Manufacturing, in particular, continues to be hard hit, with almost all of the jobs lost in California during the Bush Administration in manufacturing. As of September, the number of manufacturing jobs lost in California stands at 297,700. Nationwide, 2.5 million jobs have been lost in manufacturing since the beginning of 2001.

“Today’s numbers show that President Bush’s economic policies have not produced jobs, but only misery, for thousands of Californians,” said Lee. “From the beginning, this Administration’s economic policies have been wrongheaded. With his tax cuts for the wealthy, the President has made millionaires richer, but at the expense of thousands of regular Californians, people who struggle to pay for the necessities of life, including health care, housing, and food.”
