Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) issued the following response to the figures released by the U.S. Department of Labor showing 236,000 jobs were added in February, marking the 36th consecutive month of private sector job growth. Overall unemployment rate was 7.7 percent, its lowest level in four years.

“We are moving in the right direction, but unfortunately, the mindless, across-the-board spending cuts of the sequester are threatening serious harm to the nation’s long-term unemployed. We cannot let the communities that are already struggling bare any more burden.

"We still have more to do: 12 million Americans are still unemployed, the long term unemployment rate is at a near-record level, and African American unemployment still unacceptably high at 13.8 percent and Hispanics at 9.6 percent. We must accelerate job creation for the millions who trying to get back to work.  Job creation leads to deficit reduction, and is necessary for a full economic recovery.”
