Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) issued the following response to the figures released by the U.S. Department of Labor showing overall unemployment rate of 7.6%, its lowest level in four years. With 95,000 jobs added by private businesses, this marks the 37th consecutive month of private sector growth.
“These numbers show us that there is no time to waste to grow our economy and get our country back to work. But instead of working towards a stronger and more stable economy, Republicans are doubling down on sequester and the Ryan budget which would undermine our recovery, slash the social safety net, and push struggling families off the edge.”
“Our economy is moving in the right direction, but clearly these gains aren’t being felt everywhere. We still have more to do: 11.7 million Americans are still unemployed, the long term unemployment rate is at a near-record level, and African American unemployment still unacceptably high at 13.3 percent and Hispanics at 9.2 percent. We must accelerate job creation for the millions who trying to get back to work. Job creation leads to deficit reduction, and is necessary for a full economic recovery.”
