Washington, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy gained 204,000 jobs, marking the 44th month of private sector job growth.
"Today's jobs report shows how resilient our economy is in light of the Republicans’ irresponsible government shutdown. What remains clear is that Americans cannot afford the Republicans’ governing-by-crisis. Families and workers all across the country deserve a functioning government.
“In addition, our economy is still leaving some behind. When we see unemployment rates in the African American community of 13.1%, up from 12.9% and unemployment among Hispanics at 9.1%, up from 9.0%, and a staggering 22.2% for our youth, we know that the economic recovery isn’t reaching everyone.
“While the budget conference committee works towards a budget that both the House and Senate can agree on, it is my hope that we create a budget that is balanced and finds common sense solutions to grow the economy, protect vulnerable families, and invest in job growth.”
