Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee voiced her support for H.R. 4271, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012.  This legislation strengthens the abilities of the federal government, states, law enforcement, and service providers to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

“We must protect the right of all Americans to feel safe at home, in the workplace, and every place in between,” said Congresswoman Lee.  “Although the original Violence Against Women Act has resulted in tremendous gains, too many women continue to live in fear. And that is why we must reauthorize and strengthen this critical legislation.”

The Violence Against Women Act has a strong track record of success, demonstrably improving the criminal justice system’s ability to keep victims safe and hold perpetrators accountable.  The annual incidence of domestic violence has dropped more than 50% since the law was originally enacted.

“The original passage of the Violence Against Women Act was a defining moment for women's rights and a bipartisan victory,” Lee said.  “I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join me in again making progress to protect America’s women and children.”
