Congresswoman Barbara Lee to Join Colleagues in Introducing Resolution Calling for Resignation of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld

Resolution to be introduced in the House tomorrow

Washington- Tomorrow, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) will join fellow lead sponsors, Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-NY) and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), in offering a resolution calling on the President to immediately request the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

This resolution states that as the key architect of the Administration’s Iraq policy, Secretary Rumsfeld must bear primary responsibility for the lack of planning that has created a quagmire in Iraq, a tragedy that is underscored by the deaths of 240 American soldiers and an unknown number of Iraqi civilians.

“Secretary Rumsfeld played a key role in creating this failed and failing policy,” Congresswoman Lee stated. “The President should demand his resignation as the first step in the creation of a new policy. We must develop an exit strategy, generate greater international support, and create the conditions for a rapid transition to Iraqi sovereignty.”

“With American troops dying one, two, and now fifteen at a time, it is imperative that the Administration initiate a fundamental change in direction in its policies. Secretary Rumsfeld is clearly incapable of directing this change,” Lee said.
