Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s Statement on Trump Administration’s Notice of NAFTA Renegotiation

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement after the Trump Administration released plans to initiate negotiations with Canada and Mexico over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):

“I am deeply concerned that President Trump is attempting to use NAFTA negotiations to revive the most egregious tenets of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. We simply cannot afford to allow this president to negotiate trade agreements that benefit wealthy corporations on the backs of American workers. The American people deserve trade policies that create good paying jobs while protecting the food we eat and the air we breathe.”

“During the campaign, President Trump promised to be the president of ‘the forgotten,’ but the plans released by the White House confirm that nothing could be further from the truth. In the last 100 days, the President has failed to lift one finger in defense of working families who are locked out and left behind in this country.

“My district is the proud home of the Port of Oakland, an important gateway to US commerce. I will not stand idly by as President Trump pursues a trade deal that would devastate my constituents and families across the nation. As we have done in the past, we will stand up on behalf of the American people to fight this un-American agenda of bad trade deals.”
