Congresswoman Lee Responds to Emanuel AME Church Tragedy

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released this statement following the tragedy at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC:

“Last night, an unspeakable act of violence claimed the lives of nine people as they came together to worship in peace.

My thoughts are with the victims, their families, the congregation and the entire Charleston community as they cope with this loss.

This shooting was a senseless act of hate and it has no place in our society.

Throughout its long history, the Emanuel AME Church has faced many tragedies but has always overcome. I know that the Emanuel AME Church will continue to be a leading voice in the community for justice and peace.

As a nation, we stand ready to assist our brothers and sisters in Charleston as they grieve and rebuild. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
