Congresswoman Lee to Tour Fruitvale Transit Village with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

Oakland – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will tour the Fruitvale Transit Village located at 3401 East 12th Street in Oakland on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. The tour will highlight the work that has been done in the Ninth Congressional District to build transit-oriented developments consisting of housing, restaurants and shops along the BART transportation corridor.

The Fruitvale Transit Village – which combines housing, retail and community and nonprofit office space – received $14 million in funding from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and has been hailed as a national model for building livable communities along a major transit hub. The project was created by the Unity Council in the early 1990s and is entering its second phase.
