Lee Secures $1.4 Million in Transportation and Housing Funding for 9th District

(Washington DC) - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) announced that funding for three major 9th district projects was included in the Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development (TTHUD) Appropriations bill for 2007 that the House passed today.

“These funds will go far in terms of supporting healthy, sustainable communities in the East Bay and strengthening our local economy,” said Lee. “I am particularly proud to bring federal funds to projects that provide transportation assistance to seniors and people with disabilities, as well as housing and training to ex-offenders.”

The Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill for 2007 includes $550,000 in additional funding for the Ed Roberts Campus to be built above the Ashby BART Station, $100,000 for the Allen Temple Housing and Economic Development Corporation to rehabilitate an East Oakland building, and $750,000 for the Water Transit Authority to establish a commuter ferry boat service between Berkeley/Albany and San Francisco.

The Ed Roberts Campus will be an intermodal transportation center and disability rights center. Seniors and people with disabilities will be able to receive travel information and training on how to use public transportation in the Bay Area.

The Allen Temple Housing and Economic Development Corporation will establish an eleven-unit transitional housing program to serve formerly incarcerated individuals. Individuals housed in the refurbished East Oakland building will be enrolled in ATHEDCO’s training academy, which provides comprehensive employment training, case management, mentoring and other services to former offenders.

The ferry between the East Bay and the city of San Francisco will offer commuters an alternative to driving to work.

Securing funding for projects like these is part of Representative Lee’s ongoing effort to bring federal funds to the 9th district for infrastructure, transportation and educational projects that serve the East Bay’s diverse communities. The funding for these projects brings the total of federal funds she has helped bring to the East Bay over the last year to more than $70 million.
