Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) issued the following statement today in recognition of the 10 police recruits who were welcomed into the Oakland Police Department (OPD) by Oakland Mayor Jean and OPD Chief Howard Jordan.
The city of Oakland and OPD were able to hire the recruits as a result of a $10 million grant Congresswoman Lee worked to secure through the Department of Justice, Office of Community Policing Hiring Program. With this funding, OPD was also able to rehire 15 officers who were laid off in 2010.
“I welcome the new recruits and thank them in advance for their service in our community,” Congresswoman Lee said. “I also welcome back the 15 returning officers who were laid off last year and who showed their commitment to the city by returning to the department.
“Crime is of great concern among residents of the City of Oakland, and it’s imperative that we continue our efforts to secure federal dollars that will enhance staffing levels in the department and assist in the continued development of responsible and robust public safety strategies here in the city of Oakland.”
