Progressive Caucus To Host Forum On The Pitfalls Of NAFTA

Forum To Be Held Thursday, June 12 at 9 a.m. in 2168 Rayburn

The Congressional Progressive Caucus will host a forum on the impact of free trade agreements on American’s working poor Thursday, June 12 at 9:00am in 2168 Rayburn House Office Building.
Free trade has eliminated 3 million U.S. jobs, has threatened U.S. industrial workers from unionizing, and has led to the near-extinction of U.S. family farms.

America’s working poor -- migrant farm workers, displaced industrial sector and garment workers, and family farmers -- will testify to free trade’s damaging effects on their lives and communities.

More than a dozen members of Congress will preside over the briefing, led by Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Kucinich and Lee, as well as Reps. John Conyers (D-MI), Bob Filner (D-CA), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Major Owens (D-NY), Ed Pastor (D-AZ), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Donald Payne (D-NJ) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).

Testifying at Thursday’s forum will be representatives from United Farm Workers of America, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Farm Labor Organizing Committee, Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network, Association of Border Workers, Charleston 5 International Longshoremen’s Association, Fuerza Unida, Chinese Progressive Association, AFL-CIO, National Family Farm Coalition, Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association, American Corn Growers Association, Pacific Coast Federation of Fisherman’s Association, and Public Citizen.

US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick has been invited to attend, but has yet to confirm.

For additional information please contact Doug Gordon (Kucinich) (202) 225-5871 or Stuart Chapman (Lee) (202) 225-2661.
