U.C. Berkeley and Emeryville-based Research Center Awarded NIH Funding

Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) is pleased to announce that the University of California at Berkeley will receive 11 federal grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH) for FY09. The Emeryville-based Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center will also receiving funding under this grant program.

The NIH funds biomedical research and research training at more than 3,000 institutions throughout the United States. The funding was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The University of California at Berkeley will receive NIH funding for the following projects:

$710,579 – For red cell band 4.1 developmental changes in RNS splicing a research
$47210 – Listeria-induced cytosolic response and host immunity research
$98,890 – Cell biology of Toll-like receptor 9: a mechanism to prevent autoimmunity research
$1,177,061 – Childhood Leukemia and Home Environmental Exposures
$69,998 – Substrate Activity Screening: A New Approach to Inhibitor Discovery research
$361,725 – In vivo regulation of M. tuberculosis cell wall lipids
$34,482 – Characterization of a Transport System within the Chlamydial Inclusion
$42,075 – Taste representations in the Drosophila brain
$377,639 – Antigen process in the secretory pathway
$368,178 – Genetic susceptibility to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
$224,240 – Novel tissue-engineered treatments for Myopia Control

The Ernest and Gallo Research Center in Emeryville will receive the following funding:

$327,200 – Trafficking and signaling of opioid receptor subtypes and hereodime

“The Ninth Congressional District of California has been a leader in healthcare research,” said Congresswoman Lee. “These funds will help these institutions continue their groundbreaking work towards desperately needed treatments and cures.”
