U.C. Berkeley, Lawrence Lab and Kaiser Foundation to Receive NIH Funding

OAKLAND – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) is pleased to announce that the National Institute of Health (NIH) will steer $2.2 million to the Ninth Congressional District to support eight biomedical research projects at four institutions.

NIH has funded similar projects and training programs at more than 3,000 institutions throughout the United States. The funding for these projects is being made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Awardees include:

  • IRIS AO, INC.: $99,999 for high performance MEMS Deformable Mirror for Adaptive Optics Retinal Imaging
  • University of California, Laurence Berkeley Laboratory: $611,104 to investigate age of onset and Huntington’s Disease
  • University of California, Berkeley: $378,773 to study ethanol and retinoid metabolism/function
  • University of California, Berkeley: $202,264 for program of gene expression in olfactory neurogenesis
  • University of California, Berkeley: $266,184 to determine protein function prediction by statistical phylogenomics
  • University of California, Berkeley: $397,264 to study synaptic basis for map plasticity in cerebral cortex
  • Kaiser Foundation Research Institute: $243,959 for optimizing multidisciplinary HIV Care Team for maximal HAART Adherence
  • Kaiser Foundation Research Institute: $99,971 to investigating the generalizability of natural language processing of EMR data

Berkeley, Lawrence Lab and the Kaiser Foundation continue their pioneering work.”
