Oakland, CA — Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) announced that Youth Radio (Oakland, CA), will receive a $1.7 million grant award from the National Science Foundation to expand Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and career exposure for youth.

“I am pleased that Youth Radio has been selected to receive this important and competitive funding,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee.   “I applaud the National Science Foundation and Youth Radio’s efforts towards ensuring all young people are positioned to participate and thrive in the technology-driven careers of the future.”

In collaboration with MIT Media Labs Center for Mobile Learning and the Mozilla Foundation,  this project targets underserved youth who will collaborate with STEM professionals to co-create community-relevant technology and media content. Approximately 1000 Youth Radio students will participate in the project over the three years through contributions to app development, radio production, and digital badge creation.

Youth Radio is an award-winning media production company that trains diverse young people in digital media and technology.  Partnering with industry professionals, students learn to produce marketable media for mass audiences while bringing youth perspectives to issues of public concern.  Founded in 1992 in Berkeley during a period of heightened youth violence and homicide, Youth Radio was established as an outlet for Bay Area youth to process their experiences and provide an alternative perspective to the prevailing media dialogue.
