Oakland, CA – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) announced today that two East Bay fire departments have been selected to receive over $500,000 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The City of Albany Fire Department will receive $136,802 and the Alameda County Fire Department will receive $400,400 through the AFG Program for operational and safety programs that  include professional training, wellness and fitness programs, equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, and supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety.

The AFG program provides special funding to improve the ability of fire departments to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.  Since 2001, the AFG program has provided grants to help fire fighters and other first responders obtain critically-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

“This is great news for the City of Albany and Alameda County. This is critical funding that will allow fire departments to secure needed equipment and training to better serve the community. This funding from the federal government is important help as local governments continue to recover from the economic downturn.”
