Congresswoman Barbara Lee: GOP “Trojan Horse” Budget Benefits Billionaires on Backs of Everyday Americans
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement in response to passage of House Republicans’ Budget resolution:
“The House Republicans are using this budget as a vehicle to offer massive giveaways to wealthy special interests, paid for on the backs of everyday Americans. Make no mistake: this “Trojan horse” budget benefits millionaires and billionaires, while making heartless cuts to food stamps, denying healthcare to millions and ending Medicare and Medicaid as we know it.
“The federal budget is, at its heart, a moral document. It puts on paper the principles and priorities of a nation. With the passage of this destructive budget, Republicans once again prove how deeply out-of-touch they are with the daily struggles of everyday Americans. At a time when more than 40 million Americans are living in poverty, the federal government should be helping struggling families by investing in good-paying jobs, livable wages and ladders of opportunity for all. Yet instead of working to end poverty, which disproportionately devastates communities of color, Republicans have turned their backs on everyday Americans.
“Families deserve a budget that puts people back to work, makes smart investments in our future and protects the safety net for our children, seniors and the most vulnerable. I was proud to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus to put forth alternative budgets that address the needs and priorities of the American people. I urge my Republican colleagues to reevaluate this harmful budget and support fiscal frameworks that stabilize the country’s economy while providing critical investments in education, infrastructure, health care, and our national security.”
