Washington, D.C.— Congresswoman Barbara Lee released the following statement upon receiving the Eleanor Roosevelt Award from the Feminist Majority Foundation for her efforts to fight global HIV/AIDS:

“I am deeply honored by this award and am so grateful to the Feminist Majority Foundation for their steadfast voice in promoting women’s rights in the United States and across the world. I am so inspired by Peg Yorkin and Ellie Smeal for their tireless work with the Foundation and their leadership on so many issues that affect women.

“Working towards an AIDS-free generation is an uphill battle, but an achievable goal. With partners like Ms. Magazine and the Feminist Majority, as well as local and national advocates, I know that we can break down barriers and stamp HIV and AIDS off the face of the globe.

“When we empower women, we change communities. Now more than ever, we need the power of women to help solve our world’s most pressing problems. When we include other women and encourage full participation, we transform our societies. There’s no limit to what we can achieve when women of all races, backgrounds, creeds, and orientations join to tackle our challenges together.”
